In August 2010, Johnson & Johnson subsidiary DePuy Orthopedic issued a recall of two defective hip replacement implants:
- ASR XL Acetabular System – a hip socket replacement sold in the US and worldwide
- ASP Hip Resurfacing System – a partial hip replacement sold outside the US
The DePuy hip implants were recalled after the FDA received hundreds of complaints of early failure over the past two years. UK authorities had already taken these defective medical devices off the market in March, citing five-year failure rates of 12-13% that required many patients to have secondary surgery.
